The rooms of the Smart House have been fitted with more than 100 sensors at various heights to gather a range of data.
The Smart House has all the usual fixtures and fittings – walk-in shower, acrylic bath tub, fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, flat screen TV – to recreate a real living space as closely as possible for accurate data collection.
Day-to-day home life is reproduced by automated systems and robots. Altuglass® figures represent the house's inhabitants: two adults, two children, a grandparent and a dog. Automated systems and robots simulate the daily activities of these inhabitants so that data can be collected.
The windows of the Smart House were made to measure using unique techniques that are not yet available in the market. The Smart House is fitted with a bespoke 60-square meter curtain wall on the south facade.
This triple glazed, 60mm-thick bespoke glass wall weighs 4 tonnes. The Smart House's highly sophisticated home automation systems enable researchers to remotely control water and electricity use, open windows, turn home appliances on and off (TV, washing machine, toaster, hob, etc.), and regulate the temperature to see how readings change using different parameters.
